Unreal Tournament (1999) "Killing Spree!", "Rampage!", "Godlike!" It's not enough to gib someone with a plasma rifle and kill their friend in the face with a cluster of well-placed rockets, you need a little positive reinforcement while you're at it. Cue Unreal Tournament's gloriously over-the-top announcer. A franchise staple since the series kicked off in 1999, the announcer's growling tally of every frag you make was a strangely gratifying addition to the frenetic online shooter.

True, Epic did stray a little in latter titles, introducing a cheesier alternative and a truly disturbing 'sexy' announcer voice, but the traditional, gravelly announcer will always be the commentator of choice.

A horrific personification of protagonist James Sunderland's repressed anger and penitence, Pyramid Head has a viscerally striking part to play in Silent Hill 2.
